Fiber Defense Challenge
With each bite of food, your not only feeding yourself, but trillions of tiny microbes that live throughout the far reaches of your gut. These little evolutionary hitchhikers have been with you every second, of every day since you were born. And that's a good thing. From the moment food enters our mouth and begins its journey through the 30 or so feet of our stomach, small intestine and colon, our gut microbiota (loosely translated as "community of tiny living things") help break down natural toxins in our meals and even help create some vitamins and important essential amino acids. They also help maintain our immune system and fight off foreign pathogens that seek to do us harm daily. In addition, these tiny microbes generate energy (calories) from foods items (fiber) we cannot otherwise digest. The Fiber Defense Challenge is about "them" - the microbes who keep us well. We don't need another diet for "us" - but desperately need a nutritional strategy that recognizes we are not alone.  We must nourish our entire "super-organism" - us and them - and any diet that ignores this simple biological fact will come up short of anything near optimal health and well-being.
